This book is a revised version of a diploma thesis which was presented at the department of linguistics at the University of Innsbruck. It provides an interdisciplinary approach to the rhetorical representation of American core values in the speeches of George W. Bush. The first part of the book is an overview of the significance of presidential speech for political communication in the U.S.A. Furthermore, the process of drafting and writing speeches is discussed and different genres of presidential speeches are distinguished. In a next step different value theories are introduced and, especially, the values of compassionate conservatism are highlighted as relevant for discussion. This discussion includes philosophical as well as sociological approaches towards a study of values and morality. In the analysis section a corpus of 61 speeches, given by George W. Bush between 2000 and 2005, is deconstructed which aims at showing problematic aspects of political communication that is based on argumentation with values. Because of the great amount of data it was necessary to make a selection, which consists of 16 relevant paragraphs. These paragraphs are first of all placed into their recent historical, sociological context and then analysed according to their stylistic and argumentative aspects.
